I am opening a fed. There.
Now I'm not gonna do the ol' "THE YEAR IS 1864! The slaves have been freed, and Abe Lincoln has opened up a wrestling fed with Bobby Heenan and Jim Ross as the announcers!" bullshit that you tend to see on the forums. No, I didn't put THAT MUCH thought into this. Honestly, I was toying with the idea of opening a fed sometime late next year, but I started bouncing opinions off people this week. One thing led to the next, and all of a sudden I've got a shitload of people wanting to join. So...here it is, my fed.
In storyline, we're relatively small in scope; a regional powerhouse based out of New York City, running all of its taped for TV shows out of one venue (the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center). My obvious influence for this is Monday Night RAW circa 1994, combined with ECW of the mid-1990's. We're a grade above indy, but we're not EPW or NFW. Our roster is a combination of new characters and old has-beens in desperate need of a reboot. We have one, maybe two recognizable stars who are there to pump up the company, but that's it. The fans are a crazy bunch, led by Terence who is ALWAYS sitting front row, damn it.
Much of this is centered around what I miss in wrestling shows. I always liked the idea of a Pulp Fiction style taped show, segueing between matches (possibly occurring on different nights) and pre-taped promos involving one or two characters, intended to sell their gimmick and/or their motivations. What you see nowadays are soap opera segments where the camera just happens to be following "Wrestler X" when "Wrestler Y" comes flying out of nowhere to throw a pie in his face. I miss characters that were fun, and storylines that actually went somewhere. Angles that take a while to build so that when the payoff comes, it's a big deal.
Basic rundown of funfacts:
-Fed is tentatively named NEXT LEVEL WRESTLING (NLW)
-Launch date is 1/1/2010 (Once the school semester and holiday season end)
-One bi-weekly show consisting of 4-5 matches, 4-5 promos/segments. PPVs are quarterly, totaling four per year. We have a dual goal of quality and consistency. The cards will be good, even better than good, and I have a couple of really talented writers helping me out. The quality will always be there, but for whatever reason, if late matches are endangering card consistency, the shit is getting shortformed- END OF STORY. Think of it this way: delaying one card to ensure 100% quality would have the effect of pushing back every other card from the schedule we're looking to stay on. Two shows per month, four PPVs per year. PPV's occur at bigger east coast venues, mainly the Hartford Civic Center.
-Fed's top belt will be the World Open Weight Championship. It'll be a giant gold belt, 'nuff said. The idea came from PRIDE's Open Weight Grand Prix title of 2006, and if you google image it you'll see what look I'm going for. Or, for you non-MMA fans, compare it to WWE's Heavyweight Title. Eventually there will be a Television Title, and that's IT. No third and fourth belts, unless we wind up doing a tag division. World Open Weight Champion defends at every PPV, and once in a while on television. Television champion, when we do establish one, will usually headline the TV show.
-Tentative TV show name: 'Friday Night Vulgar'
-Don't tell me your character doesn't submit. He submits, BELIEVE ME. I've been practicing and competing in submission grappling my entire adult life, and unless your name is Renzo Gracie there is no such thing as somebody who doesn't submit. ONE GUY can be our Bret Hart and not submit, ONE, and he better have a solution to get out of the hold other than "the guy gets tired and lets him out"; that's it! So...get ready to tap, fuckers.
-Announcers will be Brian Oberstarr and Jimmy Mylde. Oberstarr is a very opinionated shill for the faces, he's NOT unbiased. Mylde, on the other hand, hates just about everybody. He doesn't shill for faces, he rarely shills for heels, and if it wasn't about the money he wouldn't be caught DEAD at the Hammerstein Ballroom with the raucous NLW fans.
-We are not strictly RP based, please keep that in mind. At the same time, your push doesn't come because I decided I liked your bio. Good bios help, but you need to sell me on your character through quality RPs, promo segments, and involving yourself in feuds. As Prez, I'm not gonna sit back and wait for all you guys to make the magic happen. My mind is always spinning, and if I think of a good feud for you, I'm going to suggest it. I'd prefer you all work together and pitch me storylines, but I am more than happy to book feuds myself. It is your quality of RP/character building/work on angles and segments that wins you a push.
-If we were running on a lighter schedule, I'd say I wanted big RP threads where everybody does 3-4 RPs, but aside from being an unrealistic expectation nowadays, I feel it's a little too much to ask when you're putting out cards bi-weekly. My ultimate goal is to run a fed where the cards are consistent, high quality, and people feel like they're a part of something different and fun. You have a week to RP, my writers and I have a week to write the shit, rinse and repeat. This means you'll be expected to RP every other week. I realize we all have lives, believe me, I get fuckloads of busy. Therefore, just give me a couple RPs every other week and I'm happy. Another factor: you're not going to be booked on every card. I might just book you for a promo segment, you never know. Yes, there will be an in/out thread, but even if you're "in" and I've already got the amount of matches I'm looking for, you still might not be booked. I don't know, I'll have to see how things go. Bigger matches should warrant greater output, but if you do only 1-2 RPs, I'd like to see you submit a card promo/segment. I want everybody to feel like they're a part of "the show."
-Most likely, I'm going to post a quarterly schedule so that you know exactly what to expect from us. The end of a quarter is marked by the end of a PPV RP deadline. A quarter begins when the lineup of our first show after a PPV is posted.
-Because it's only gonna take one, two, at the most three people to write out shows, I'm never going to ask you to help out unless special circumstances arise. Typically, on 5 match card, I'll write three matches, Mike Stanton will write two, and everything else is by the members with whatever segments I happen to include myself. I have a couple other people who may or may not help out with the cards, we'll see how that goes. Important matches will get their appropriate length, but keep in mind this is an hourly show. The purpose of the show is to put over the characters and the storylines, and the matches are a means to that end. None of my characters will be competing.
More details will emerge before Christmas, but that's what we're looking at right now. We still have over a month to put this thing together, and I'm really encouraged by the amount of interest shown thus far. I'm looking to have our forums up by Mid-December, maybe even sooner.
One last thing I want to say about NLW. I'm not creating it in reaction to anything that's going on in EPW, NFW, FMLL, LVW, or WFW: NE. All of those currently active FWC leagues have their good points and bad, and I'm sure we will too. Anybody who asks me knows how much I love the league I'm most involved in. Shit, I've been with NFW since 2000, even further back if you want to count my involvement in UWA starting in 1997, and my involvement only ended when I left FW altogether from 2004-2008. EPW has been great to me too; I've probably written more for them in one year than I've written for any league in the same amount of time. Brunk pushed a brand new character of mine before knowing anything about me or my past in FWC, and his league has been great to me. FWC is a really good community, and I'm just looking to make it better. We're not trying to do EPW's thing better than they can, or do NFW's thing; we're doing NLW's thing. You've got three active FWC feds to choose from, all very different from one another, and now you'll have a fourth. My hope is we can also bring some new membership to the forums as well.
So fucking join.
Wrestlemania was awful

I know it's typical to over-react right after something's just happened,
but man Wrestlemania sucked. Some of the in-ring action was fine, but the
booking ...

Yes, join!!! Join damn you!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Yay another fed out of the Ballroom. So ORIGINAL... I think I will just go back to watching old Tapes rather than read stuff from a guy that is so high into himself that his shit has turned gold.
ReplyDeleteWho said anything about original? Hate to break your gentle little heart, but there's not much originality to fantasy wrestling. Everybody is influenced by something, and in some way is trying to recreate their better memories of pro-wrestling. For the record though, I've been around FW since around 1997, and I haven't come across a fed based out of Hammerstein. Not saying it hasn't happened, not saying it's terribly original, I just haven't seen it. Second, from a kayfabe standpoint, the owner runs a regional promotion where house shows occur all over the East. The TV show is taped at Hammerstein. Let's think about this logically: if I'm the owner of an east coast promotion, with a decent amount of money but not enough to expand, where should I tape my TV shows? One would think NYC, the biggest east coast market. And in NYC, what venue provides me a reasonable balance of size and value? Naturally, Hammerstein or any of the rooms at the Manhattan Center. The owner doesn't choose the ballroom to be "cool", he does it because circumstances dictate it.
ReplyDeleteFrom my standpoint, I'm looking to create a fed with an aesthetic that appeals to people on the forums (who are all in my age group). I grew up watching Monday Night Raw and ECW, as people in the south generally grew up with NWA and then WCW.
Unlike a lot of others who start feds with a certain aesthetic in mind and fail to capture it, I've actually lived what I'm writing about. I grew up going to the Manhattan Center for concerts, wrestling, you name it. I saw RAW there when I was 10, saw ECW there a couple times in high school. I'm in the city every month for hockey games and other stuff, been doing it since I was a kid. I know the area, I know the culture, and it'll reflect in my writing.
Of course, I could make it a lot easier and just create a fed comprised entirely of all my own characters, but hey...I got sick of playing with my own GI JOES years ago. I could have also been a gutless cocksucker and shit on your precious (insert name of precious thing of yours I shit on HERE) anonymously, but unlike some of you pussies, I actually put my name on shit; and hell, if you're really lucky, I put it on video. So...eat my ass.
I think Varga's going to have to join and fuck some shit up. In a related story, that seg will be in your inbox soon.
ReplyDeleteDude.. Mr. Anonymous? Whoever the hell you are? Seriously. Stop being such a goddamn pussy and post your fuckin' name or shut the holy fuck up.
ReplyDeleteNo drive by bullshit insults. Bullshit pussy ass bitch...
Amen Dave. Now that Brunk ripped this guy an asshole the size of British Columbia, let this be the last comment on Mr. Anonymous, lest we allow him to hijack NLW's glorious announcement! All future replies from Mr. Anonymous shall be deleted until he names himself.
ReplyDeleteBarry Clark approves of this blog and will fuck you up. Also count me in on joining.
ReplyDeleteWow, that Dave guy has a temper. That was NOT NICE.
ReplyDeleteNLW should have a jobber named Mr Anonymous. He wears all black, and a milk carton taped around his face.
ReplyDeleteLOL! That Dave guy does have a temper. :-) But, Mr. Anonymous did kind of come of like a hater.
ReplyDeleteI'm telling you now, Brisbin and I would DEFINITELY join with a certain tag team.
Mr. Anonymous is most likely posting at eWTorch or EWZine, so should any of us really be surprised that he hates Billy?
ReplyDeleteAlso, FW.com is down. I presume its because of this blog's announcement.
-MUSTdie
Congratulations with the new fed, I hope it flies.
ReplyDeleteOh...and P.S. "Of course, I could make it a lot easier and just create a fed comprised entirely of all my own characters..." You're just lucky I don't fly off the handle at every perceived slight. :) But seriously, best of luck with the new fed.
Silver Lining: Billy's not going to put the World Open Weight Championship on his character, a la (NAME RETRACTED BECAUSE LINDZ ISN'T ALLOWED TO MAKE THE JOKE).
